I have to admit it. The first scene that came to mind for VARIANTS, the first book in my Anathergians Sci-Fi/Paranormal Romance Trilogy, was the huge sex scene. Well… maybe not the first. My hero, Auden, began tickling my consciousness a few months prior to the sex scene. I always knew he was from another planet, that he was powerful, and immortal. And sexy as hell.
The sex scene is more than just sex. It’s where my heroine, Leah, transforms into becoming an immortal Anathergian. It’s also where she and Auden become Lifemates.
Though my characters in the Anathergians Saga are immortal, they can be harmed and even die. I think this is important in a story. I’ve read stories where, no matter what happens to a character, it’s pretty much a known fact the person will never die. In order for a character to grow, there needs to be character development. The person must grow. Learn. Become… into whatever it is they are meant to be.
Without growth, there is no story. Luke Skywalker had a mysterious and ‘evil’ father, lost his aunt and uncle, and then discovered he could become a Jedi. At first, he isn’t very good at it. He bumbles around, but eventually he learns… He grows… He becomes.
The same goes for Harry Potter. His parents were killed in a ‘car crash.’ Then he learns he’s a wizard, and the evil wizard Voldemort actually killed his parents. He, with the help of his trusty friends, builds his skills (though he isn’t the best at them) so he can help defeat Voldemort. He learns. He grows. He becomes.
Leah, my heroine, has no idea who her father is, but her mother died when she was young. She’s fostered by a not-so-great family. It isn’t until she’s sixteen that she discovers she’s part witch. Four years later she learns she’s also part Anathergian. Auden takes her in and she learns how to use her new-found powers. She learns. She strengthens. She becomes something she never thought she would be, and defeats the enemy who’s scheming to lead an alien force to invade Earth.
Auden, my hero, may be over five thousand years old and the king of his people, but he still has a lot of learning to do. He’s on the brink of insanity since he hadn’t yet met his Lifemate. When he comes across Leah, he’s perplexed and flabbergasted. She really isn’t what he expected in a Lifemate. Leah challenges him in ways he’s never encountered before—certainly not as a king—and he has to learn to negotiate. When he believes he’s lost her, his life falls to pieces. Then, with her return, the pieces come slowly back together. He comes to realize how fragile life is, despite being immortal and all powerful. He learns. He grows. He becomes something more than he was before.
What is your story? How does it develop? How do your characters grow? How do they become?
One of my favorite quotes is from a Star Wars book, in which I can’t remember the name, is uttered to Luke: “Be what you want to seem.” Wise words spoken by Obi-Wan Kenobi.
