When I think of cowboys, I always think of the rodeo. In truth, I’ve only attended one live rodeo, but it was a good one, the National Finals Rodeo here in Las Vegas. Back then, the event didn’t have the glitz and sparkle it does today. But it was still memorable.
Although I’ve only attended one in person, I’ve watched many rodeos on TV and the internet. My favorite part of the rodeo is watching the bull riders. I can’t say exactly why it’s my favorite event, but it has to be the animals. I don’t quite comprehend why anyone would choose to sit atop a half-ton of pure mean and risk serious bodily injury. Well, maybe I do understand why. The adrenaline rush the bull riders experience has to be phenomenal. It’s the same excitement I get from watching, compounded many times over.

In my story, Total Eclipse of the Heart, I write about one such cowboy. Cody Hunter is a talented, young bull rider having a good year. But he’s also chasing demons. One demon in particular is rank bull, Total Eclipse, who had injured Cody in a bull ride and killed his best friend. In order to overcome his fears, Cody must ultimately face the bull that can’t be ridden.
I enjoyed writing this story, since I was able to experience the total rush of adrenaline that comes from sitting on a bucking, stomping, twisting freight train with horns. In my research, I also learned that bulls can be gentle giants when there’s no one sitting on their backs. And they’re cute, to boot!
